I guess MATE's PPA for Ubuntu 11.10 will work with Trisquel 5.5 Brigantia  
(anybody has done that?). I hope this PPA does not contain any proprietary  
software (hard to thoroughly check). The installation procedure only amounts  
to executing the following command in a terminal:
$ sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu  
oneiric main"
