I think the main issues I'd focus on is back porting critical pieces to LTS  
releases. However any Linux Mint Libre edition would be best for marketing  
free software to the masses. Its advantage to free software enthusiasts is  
not really in that it offers a different user interface.

If the Linux Mint project ends up with an environment that is very good it is  
likely that Rubén will adopt it for Trisquel. Linux Mint is developing free  
software even though they do other things that are bad like include non-free  
pieces in the distribution. This is if it meets all the criteria with which  
he has to work (supports non-3d accelerated cards well, etc).
