Actually, I have just taken a look at the "System settings" and it looks like you do not even need to use gconf-editor. Just click "Screen" in this configuration window. There is a "lock" switch.
I believe you have to tick a box in gconf-editor: press Alt+F2, type
'gconf-editor' and navigate to /apps/gnome-screensaver. The box that you need
ticked is "lock_enabled" ("lock" is unchecked in my system).
