Perhaps you will also need a "roomate detector"too, maybe implemented through a webcam + the "motion" package? Through some scripting you could have the system lower the volume when people are around, even keep statistics to learn presence patterns. That would fully automate it. I believe in the 90's or 2000's I remember hearing similar systems being described as implementing "fuzzy logic", for example air conditioning only kicking in when people would be around, and slowly adjusting/learning until the system knew when to start in advance and learned from previous usage patterns.
