 if there was no profit to be made from software development, it would
still be done. People develop software because it's fun, because the
software would be useful, etc.

But that isn't likely. There will always be people who need new software
 on demand (i.e. custom software), and they need to pay someone to get
this reliably. There's also the promise of crowd-funding, which allows
something similar to custom software for the general public.a
