I always put the following into .Xresources and my fonts look perfect no  
matter in Trisquel, Debian or whatever. Supposedly, these settings are what  
Ubuntu uses:

Xft*hinting:   true
Xft*hintstyle: hintslight
Xft*rgba:      rgb
Xft.lcdfilter: lcddefault
