Well, I don't think that really applies here. This is a proprietary game which uses the Quake 3 engine (which was released as free software several years ago) that is now having its engine freed after 10 years. A 10-year-old engine based on another engine which was freed years ago isn't going to have an impact, and plus, since this started out as proprietary software, it stands to reason that there must be an improved version of the engine which is being used in current, similar games, all of which are still proprietary.
