I think that because most people want to be hands off their software, they
just want it to work. They don't personally want to have to go through code
and what-not, that would keep a software industry going. The majority of
folks would gladly pay for free as in free beer software if it is of good
quality, and because it's free they will have infinite amounts of choices to
choose from because people will be changing and improving on what's already
there. Or they could have it customized and tailored to the application they
need it for. There is still money to be had with free software. Maximizing
freedom is the key.
