I had the same problem, but there's actually a very easy way to do this.
First, remove LibreOffice 3.x using the package manager. Once you've done
that, go to LibreOffice.org and download the "Linux" [sic] .deb packages.
Extract the archive and follow the instructions that it provides, namely: go
into the DEBS subdirectory, open it in the terminal, and run dpkg -i *.deb.
It will automatically be installed. Then go into the "desktop-integration"
folder and run the same command. Check your main menu; LibreOffice should be
under the office category. If you want an icon on the panel for quick access,
drag it from the main menu to the panel, and press Alt+right click to move it
to where you want.
