SIP is a standard protocol. Your friends don't need to use the same program  
as you as long as they're using the same protocol. If Skype would just  
support standard protocols, you wouldn't even need to tell your friends to  
use something other than Skype. It's just like how I can use XChat IRC to  
talk to people on IRC who might be connected via Pidgin or some other IRC  
client.
