It isn't yet, it has a nonfree VGA ROM and no free distro supports it
yet: both gNS and Parabola work with separate nonlibre kernels.
http://www.gnewsense.org/Projects/GNewSenseToMIPS-3A suggests it being
possible to use with heavily patched Linux-libre, so it should be as
free as Coreboot-using desktop systems in near future (with gNS:
Parabola currently has no active developers for 3A).

It also doesn't have the fast software rasterizer of llvmpipe and needs
some assembly patching to play videos (Loongson CPUs use custom SIMD
extensions).
