[Trisquel-users] free distributed and self-hosted social networks

There's Diaspora, GNU Social, and I've heard of one that uses xmpp for  
accounts.  Are these inter-operable?  A challenge with starting a social  
network is that in the beginning, peoples' friends are not on it.
