You are referring to the software firewall. I agree that it isn't very  
helpful, but in GNUuser's case, it is better than nothing. The best option is  
to use a physical firewall, which cannot be affected by the malicious program  
on the computer. A firewall is definitely not an end-all solution, but it  
does help in some scenarios. As I mentioned earlier, my IDS has been one of  
the most useful tools as far as network security goes.
