From what I've read my understanding is that this is precisely what he was
trying to prevent. If users logged in, and the servers were already bugged it
would have compromised their data. If the users didn't log in, the mailbox
should be encrypted, so it should take Big Brother longer to get to the data.
This would explain why the initial response was to disable the servers (the
day before the shutdown, the servers were down but the rest of the page was
working).
