Remember the moral part of software development is on the developers, not the users. The users are the victims of non-free software, but it's not immoral to use it. But it's dangerous.
I've got a Nook Simple Touch, and if all you are interested in is an ebook
reader that you can use to read non-drm ebooks then just turn the wifi off
and keep it off. Don't upgrade the firmware. It's still running nonfree
software, but you've basically turned it into an appliance like a microwave.
It does one thing, you know what it does and how to deal with it, and since
you aren't upgrading the firmware the features won't change.
