You had better solve the problem. Does the "Update Manager" properly work? If  
not, there probably is something wrong with your "Software sources" (the name  
of the utility to manage them). Maybe you are using a mirror that is not  
functioning (anymore). Can you show us the content of /etc/apt/sources.list?
