I think you can change your keyboard after the orca screen reader starts  
talking; that is, assuming you've wited for it to start automatically.  I  
think doing anything during the timeout causes the clock to stop?  Regarding  
Sonar, the one based on Ubuntu 13.04 may be the last one based on Ubuntu STS.  
 The next Sonar, due very soon, is based on Manjaro, a derivative of Arch.   
Having the latest software has become a greater priority of the project than  
being libre.
