Are you referring to the libre Linux kernel?

LIfe is short. I try not to reinstall every single day :) But yes, I'll
eventually re-test this.

Yes, after a vanilla install, before upgrading kernels etc.

Yes, you would need to create the USB key with Chrome on it. If you
reboot and don't type Ctrl-L, it will reverse to some state where it
expects chrome to be there - and it won't, so there you go, you'll have
to reinstall. For this not to happen you need to follow this:

This is probably the only kind of computer I would never do the same
manipulations I did on for anyone else. You can feel the potential to
brick it / make it unbootable so unless you know exactly what you are
doing, are very comfortable with command line, and are willing to
wipe/reinstall, don't get one.
