There are also Prosody (MIT) and ejabberd (GPL) which in my opinion are not that greedy on resources and slow as most software written in Java. Ejabberd is written in Erlang and Prosody is written in Lua. That is a an assumption since I've never used Openfire. Ejabberd for example can run on 512 MB (and probably less) virtual machine for low traffic server with very few users registered directly on it.
