Except the U/S Patent Office allowed M$ a patent on FAT on silicon drives years after FAT was publicly available because a different type of media constituted a novel step. At the time (early 90s IIRC) M$ set the price as ~$250K for anyone who wanted to manufacture say an SD card. So choose free software originated file systems for your media if you live in or visit such jurisdictions.

As a general point it's proprietary systems which are incompatible and GNU/Linux the free/open defacto standard not the other way around.
