As with your Thunderbird thread this is almost certainly some sort of network  
problem and neither Pidgin or Thunderbird.  Please move to the other thread  
with this, as the same questions will apply.

Don't worry it's a perfectly natural mistake to make - if your machine was  
running Windows then it would be the first thing to suspect not the last :-).
