On top of that, if the software on their server is built by them and for them for a custom purpose, then they have no obligation to share. If they do distribute their custom software, then that's another story.
I agree. Many of these servers are probably running a flavor of GNU/Linux or
BSD and free software applications like Apache, MySQL, nginx, PHP, or Python
to serve the data. As long as the output data that the server returns is in
an open format (like JSON or XML) then its not a big deal.
