Or you could take a peek at /var/log/syslog in case it contains something related and useful. (Yeah, not exactly an easy log to decipher...)
Probably the panel crashes. To perhaps find out why try running it from a
terminal as suggested by davidnotcoulthard. (Leave the term window open you
launch the panel from and hope for a crash, then should one happen look at
the term window to see a potential error message.) You can launch a terminal
with Ctrl+Alt+T.
