What widely used component of GNU is replaced or is incompatible? systemd  
replaced sysvinit, udev, ConsoleKit. None of them is a GNU component. GNOME  
has plans to abandon gnome-session when Linux is the kernel because  
ConsoleKit is no longer maintained and logind (part of systemd) does a better  
job. In fact, https://wiki.freedesktop.org/www/Software/ConsoleKit/ warns us  
in bold letters:

ConsoleKit is currently not actively maintained. The focus has shifted to the  
built-in seat/user/session management of Software/systemd called  
systemd-logind!
