ati video card? Trisquel 7? I guess you have also a screen resolution  
something like 1024*768 .. Yes?
Ati cards require non free firmware for video acceleration. I guess your  
problem is caused by the video player you are using (like totem or vlc) set  
to use the wrong outpout driver (I think the default is xv). If that is the  
case try setting X11 as the output.
In VLC it is: tools -preferences - video - output - X11
