Privacy by policy is no privacy at all.
First, no one is going to jail because of your privacy, even less when you are using a free service and not paying them. So, even if the people behind the project are honest, they still have to comply with the law. They log your IP and connection duration so they have enough information for the government or anyone else to burn you. Second, most of these people are not honest, they actually make profiles based on watching your browsing and sell those to companies and governments. If you want to have priacy, use Tor, I2P, or other decentralized community based service.

Now, having said that... if you can't use Tor or I2P (for whatever reason) and want to make it so your ISP can't watch your connection, use a VPN yes, it's better than nothing, but seriously don't think that you are safe... you are not. You are ONLY hiding from your ISP. NO ONE ELSE!!
