I use a Thinkpad X60 that I picked up on eBay for $20. I plan on giving my  
son the same hardware for his eighth birthday.

Once I realized that I needed a specialized stylus, the touchscreen worked  
fine, even with my favourite desktop environment, Joe's Window Manager, which  
is quite clean and minimalist compared to OSX or whatever Apple calls it now.
