Thanks SuperTramp83 for your suggestions and links. I did try a few of the  
methods detailed in the links but no success with Trisquel 6. Then recently,  
as mentioned in other threads, I dual-booted Trisquel 7 on the same machine.

Eureka! I managed to get Mumble working on Trisquel 7. Next steps are to try  
some video conferencing apps in Trisquel 7, and to try again with Trisquel 6,  
and see if whatever it was that fixed the problem has been backported.
