GUIs pretty much always suck. Period. They're pretty much only good for web-browsing, word processing (even then, LaTeX), and image editing. Even though terminal programs are generally faster and easier to understand, they're often harder to learn than the GUI. Part of this is, I believe, is a self-fulfilling prophecy. People believe that using a terminal is slow and difficult, so when they try it for the first time and mess up a little, they revel in confirmation bias. People generally avoid GNU/Linux *because* they believe that they'll have to use the terminal. Trying to teach them to use a terminal when they start using GNU/Linux could very well leave a nasty taste in their mouth, and will confirm in their minds that Windows is easier to use. I recommend referring new users to GUIs, and referring technically inclined users to the terminal.
