I never needed to do this but I've read some did. Try to comment (#) the radeon related entries in these files
/etc/modprobe.d/fbdev-blacklist.conf /etc/modprobe.d/disable-radeon.conf /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf then: sudo update-initramfs -u
