You raise some important issues, and I think the habits of consumerism, and the groups who job is to cultivate them in people, have a lot to answer for. But I also want to reiterate the TL;DR of my posting above: people need their software to work. If it doesn't, if it distracts them from their work (as I'm starting to find trying to keep my old laptop working with Trisquel), it makes the computer about as useful as a brick.
