If we are talking about a laptop, there usually is a Fn+something key  
combination to activate/deactivate the touchpad... and it is possible that  
the "something" key is not the one with the touchpad drawing on it (due to  
bugs in ACPI).

Have you tried plugging a USB mouse in? Does it work?
