Debian main is totally free. The objection of the FSF is that it recommends
nonfree firmware in the installer, in some cases (but not all). Usually it is
just for things like WiFi, Bluetooth and occasionally graphics. You should be
aware of these but there is nothing really wrong with using Debian main only,
as it is free. I think the problems may arise with new users who aren't sure
what works or not, so the problem the FSF has is that it might cause new
users to install nonfree software they don't need.
On the subject of gNewSense, it seems that development has stopped. So it is
better to use Trisquel right now.
