They are refurbished Lenovo laptops, which have been reverse-engineered to
run Libreboot and have had a new WiFi chip installed.
It is a question of compromise. We would love new hardware, if it did not
have backdoors and proprietary BIOS we can't change. The hardware is old, but
Trisquel runs pretty well. Keep in mind these were high-end laptops when they
were released.
If you want Libreboot but want newer hardware, you could look for other
models supported. There are two desktop motherboards, including one still
available from internet retailers. There is also a Chromebook supported,
which is reasonably new, although it has other flaws.
