Well, assuming your laptop suspends upon the lid closing, you could start X  
on the desktop and then make the desktop suspend.
I don't recall the command for suspending on Trisquel, but I think it was  
"suspend" or something along those lines.
If the command is "suspend", perhaps add "suspend" to your xinitrc.
