The current version of Mint is based on the same Ubuntu LTS (at least from
what I can tell). So packages will probably not break. Be careful not to
upgrade any more packages than is necessary to install Cinnamon though. That
could cause conflicts when you remove the Mint repositories. See my previous
answer as well: you could try the official MATE development PPA, as they have
similarities and you may enjoy using MATE as much as Cinnamon if you liked
the GNOME 2 desktop environment.
