Install mate-desktop-environment with the --no-install-recommends option to
get the bare minimum. It will install a duplicate terminal (mate-terminal)
and File Manager (Caja), and they show up in GNOME Shell. However in MATE
itself gnome-terminal does not show up and you can just use the normal task
manager (gnome-system-monitor). I resent the duplicates too, but MATE has
fewer dependencies than GNOME Shell (even package gnome-core installs all
sorts of unwanted applications: e.g. evolution mail, gnome-contacts).
If you will actually get rid of GNOME Shell then this should not be too
serious.
