Have you checked the "Tweak Tool" in the "System Settings"? You can change  
the theme for the icons, the cursor ("Whiteglass" is a larger white cursor),  
etc. Under the "Fonts", you can specify scaling rate above 1. Years ago, I  
did that for my mother. She has never complained.
