Quick recap: I have a script that roughly works since today, but with sudo.  
Thunar is great, but launching scripts globally seems impossible.

My focus is now on dmenu. It seems there are ways to launch scripts as sudo.
THEN if this works, I'll get back to udev to hopefully tighten the script.
