One can monkey with the compatibility parameters of extensions. Sometimes the  
declared parameters are too strict and it will work just fine outside of  
those.

If you wish to try, the .xpi is just an archive you can open with e.g.  
file-roller. Inside you'll find an install.rdf file which defines among other  
things maxversion.
