I'd like to chime in and say that I just copy the youtube link and paste it  
in smplayer, the vid gets played and that is all.
Another great application by the same developer (Riccardo Villalba) of  
smplayer is smtube, with which you can browse, view and download YT videos.  
But you'll need to compile it and disable javascript and cookies (it takes 10  
seconds).
