There is various sorts of malware available, just run rkhunter to see the
kind of malware out there.
The difference is that it's harder for someone to get it if they only install
software in the repository. Thanks, cryptographic signatures! PPAs, though,
could in theory serve up various things. Windows/Mac users usually install
programs from the internet so that is mostly how things get in, although
Apple's emphasis on using the "Mac App Store" by default has alleviated this
to an extent. Still, malware isn't necessarily just made by criminals. Many
of us would probably argue that digital restrictions and "data collection" is
generally malicious.
