What happens if you try to start the GUI with:
sudo start lightdm
hit Enter
type in password
hit Enter

Then, if the screen is still black with white writing, try Ctrl-Alt-f7

Actually, maybe try Ctrl-Alt-f7 first and see if it is already started.
