It turns out the Sony readers all run a simple GNU/Linux system called "Montavista Linux". So in theory it would be possible to port some custom software to it. Have a look here. It is possible to use permission escalation exploits to gain root access and install custom apps. I am not sure if you need root access to install Fdroid. There is Relaunch, a custom launcher for eebook readers with e-ink displays.
