Tox is the best alternative, it´s right what you need. you can chat through  
it and do videocalls (or only voice too) and it´s for most operating  
systems. Although form IM I personally recommend Kontalk (based on XMPP and  
OpenPGP), but is just for android and you cannot make groups or calls.
