It is an interesting project but not worth the money to be honest. $300 for a keyboard is very expensive. Regarding firmware, I think that this requires firmware because it is very complex. I am unsure as of whether a simple unbranded USB keyboard has such an embedded firmware; at least if it did it would be so simple it is really hard to make it malicious. At any rate, just because firmware is free software doesn't mean we can blankly trust it as an end user. Would a laptop keyboard connected with ribbon cable even have embedded firmware in it; isn't the firmware usually for the USB controller?
