Is as I always say: Instead of forking, help out. In this case, since .deb-based distributions are in the context, I recommend helping Trisquel project and also gNewSense project.
Take the "Distro Forking 101" article, t3g's recommendation, the GNU FSDG 100 times, and you'll see how much of a heavy work it is even for ten people.
