Those specs are pretty modern, i would suggest using Parabola to test the  
WiFi not Trisquel 7.Or as suggested, Trisquel 8 Alpha
As for VPN you want a provider that uses OpenVPN and doesn't collect data on  
their clients, and preferably lets you pay in bitcoin to not have payment  
data on you either. Or you could set up openvpn yourself (a bit manual but  
worth it)
