Hi!
I presume you're using Trisquel 7. If you go into the 'Tweak Tools' section of the System Settings, and then to the 'Desktop' tab, there should be an option called Mode, which is probably set to Zoom. Change that to Stretch, and it should resize the background to fit the screen, albeit stretching it.
