You really do not need Freesync: the display will work without it and,
besides a couple of benchmarking tools, only a dozen of proprietary video
games support it. The new AMDGPU DAL driver, which supports that variable
refresh rate technology, is supposed to be free... except that the GPL source
code in https://github.com/M-Bab/linux-kernel-amdgpu comes along a firmware
repository with a README that says:
That repository contains all these firmware images which have been extracted
from older drivers, as well various new firmware images which we were never
permitted to include in a GPL'd work, but which we _have_ been permitted to
redistribute under separate cover.
